The Affordable Care Act’s Individual Mandate has been phased out and 2018 was the final year in which an Obamacare penalty could apply.
Use this calculator to estimate your 2018 ACA penalty. The fine, if any, is enforced as a result of the Shared Responsibility Payment under the individual mandate of the Affordable Care Act.
Like 2017, the amount is based on either 2.5% of your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) or a flat rate amount, whichever was higher.
You’ll need to know your 2018 income to calculate the penalty. Any IRS fine was payable when you filed your return in 2019.
Be sure to check if you qualified for an exemption, to avoid an Obamacare fine, if you were without health insurance in 2018.
Above is the combined Obamacare fine estimate for everyone included on your tax return. If the number is zero then you aren’t liable for any penalty!
Please Note the Following:
1. You should calculate fine amounts separately if some individuals on your return were without health insurance for different time-frames during 2018.
2. If you had a dependent child who turned 18 years old sometime in 2018 then the Obamacare penalty attributed to them will likely need to be calculated separately.
