The IRS has published some statistics about the Obamacare fine. Results show that more people than expected paid a penalty when they filed their 2014 tax returns.
Around 5% of tax filers were subject to an Obamacare fine in 2014 or approximately 8.1 million people. The average penalty was around $210 for a total of nearly 1.7 billion dollars.
2014 was the first year of the Affordable Care Act’s Individual Mandate.
It’s expected that Obamacare fines collected by the IRS will substantially rise. This isn’t surprising since penalties have significantly increased as a percentage of income over time.
